International Results endorse PBF genetics

23rd of June, 2008

Feature Show results at the World Brahman Congress held in Fort Worth, Texas, U.S.A. in late May have focused the Brahman breed spotlight on the PB Fenech Female Genetics Sale, to be held on Saturday 28th June at “The Chase, Sarina.

Paul & Brigid Fenech of PB Fenech Grey Brahmans were delighted to receive the news from America last week that JDH Mr Mosley Manso 368/1, a young sire they purchased semen rights in for Australia last year, was judged International Grand Champion Bull of the prestigious event.  The Fenechs will have their first calves on the ground by this International Champion in early Spring.  “Even more exciting news,” Paul Fenech said, “is the fact that Mosley is a son of JDH Mr Shannon Manso, and we have 15 lovely daughters of Shannon catalogued in our forthcoming Female and Genetics Sale.”  It is expected Brahman Studmasters Australia wide will welcome the opportunity to secure these acclaimed bloodlines as JDH Mr Shannon Manso is now deceased and there is little of his semen available anywhere in the Brahman world.

PBF have catalogued 50 Grey Brahman Heifers, 10 Open Mating Packages and 10 Semen Packages for the Sale.  Sirelines represented in the heifer line up include the high profile imports JDH Mr Furnari Manso, JDH Westin Manso, JDH Mr Churchill Manso, JDH Palestimo R Manso, JDH Mr Woodman Manso, JK Mr Sugar Crata 206, JDH Mr Melanson Manso and Mr V8 730/5.

The Sale will take the breed into new marketing territory in Australia with its offering of Open Mating lots.  Buyers are offered access to ten of the Stud’s leading donor dams for an IVF programme, with a guarantee of three pregnancies per donor.  Sale Selling Agents Landmark and McCaffrey’s Australian Livestock Marketing believe this new concept is an attractive addition to the Brahman selling agenda which should find support from both larger and smaller Stud enterprises.

“The Fenechs have backed the format to the hilt and that’s reflected in the ten exceptional donors they have made available,” Ken McCaffrey of McCaffrey’s Australian Livestock Marketing said.  “One of them has produced Sale progeny totalling over $250,000, three others have produced outstanding sire sons already, and there are also five young, beautifully bred heifers, the pick of the Stud’s first calf breeders.”

Another feature lot is the renowned matron, FBC Data Ann Manso 206.  This rising 8yo daughter of breed legend JDH Datapack Manso has produced an illustrious breeding record with sons and daughters both selling at auction to a top of $36,000.  She is a highly fertile, productive donor dam and is currently in calf to PBF Beauman Manso 332, due to calve late August.  “She is a flagship cow for our Stud,” Paul Fenech said.  “We have retained several valuable daughters and we look forward to her continuing her quality breeding record for her new owners.”

Landmark’s Stud Stock representative Bruce Scott believes Data Ann is the most highly credentialled Brahman stud female to “go under the hammer” in Australia in the last 15 years. “It’s hard to put a value on such a cow,” Bruce said, “it’s rare to see this standard of female available for sale, however Paul & Brigid are confident fellow Studmasters will recognise the potential yet to be realised through the utilisation of new sirelines over Data Ann.”

PBF Stud’s leading sires are represented in the Sale by 5 straw semen packages.  Included in the semen section are four young bulls the Stud considers among the best sire prospects they have bred.  Each of these four, Harper, Langford, Oryon and Abraham, produced semen at 18 months of age.

ourstory

Our Story

Familiar faces in the Brahman industry, Paul and Brigid Fenech co-founded PB Fenech Grey Brahmans in 2004. Paul, principal of the stud, has been in the industry for some 16 years and has a simple philosophy, “A line bred Brahman with adequate growth and breed character will breed on and beyond it’s potential and exceed the expectations of the purchaser.”

Keen on the Brahman stud industry, Paul, at the age of 21, took the huge step of selling his beloved ski boat and restored Ford GT and imported his first Brahman heifers from the JD Hudgins Ranch in Texas. Prior to establishing their own enterprise Paul and Brigid had been part of a larger family concern. In 1991, Paul was integral in establishing a larger family based stud when he chose and imported JDH Elefante R Manso 272/9 (Imp US), who became not only the Fenech Brahman Cattle Co founding sire, but also had a huge impact on the Brahman and in fact Beef industry, Australia wide, selling for a record (at that time) $105 000 in 1995.

For many years, Paul poured all available resources into securing what he believed were the best grey Brahman genetics in the world. To this day Paul and Brigid continue with that similar formula. “You have to know what you want, and be prepared to back yourself…and be prepared to fall. Anything worth doing is worth the risk.”

With this formula in mind, Paul selected at four months of age and imported a powerful sire in JDH Palestimo R Manso 787/6 in 2003, the flagship sire of the Stud. Palestimo currently holds the world record for semen prices and his progeny average just over $19 000. Along with Palestimo, Paul and Brigid have imported JDH Marri R Manso 356/6 and secured several top line exclusive Semen contracts from the United States. With the newly established stud, Paul and Brigid set themselves further challenges. In 2005, they took on the task of establishing their own selling complex at Upper Alligator Creek Road, Sarina, Queensland, Australia. The inaugural sale conducted on 22 October 2005 was an outstanding success, grossing just under $750 000 for 49 lots. It has been described as the best selling complex in the world.

Paul and Brigid have the interests of the industry at heart and are passionate about the breed. Customer focussed and quality driven, they are in the industry for the long haul and believe they have something to offer their peers. They have invested the commitment, time and finances into a concern they believe will continue to grow and expand. Paul and Brigid have three children, Bridie, 6 years, James, 4 years and Tomas, 20 months.
